It's the anniversary of going bust and the anniversary of a Masterclass.
In 1990 the company I worked for went bust… Wow, that seems like five minutes ago! So much has happened since those early days… and yet some things stay the same.
What I discovered about myself in those early days was a love of working with people. I loved working with cars… the faster and the more challenging the better.
I discovered that it was possible to make a living doing what I loved, working with people and helping them to make their world a richer and safer place.
Almost twenty years ago I was busy developing an insight into what worked in driving and I started discovering and developing the tools that would make it possible to deliver my goals.
I discovered NLP and coaching. When I combined them with driving I had a practical technology that could deliver measurable results.
And what of wisdom? In the years since, life has taught me a great deal.
In 1997 I designed my ideal day; a dream day; getting up early for a swim, breakfast and a drive in a nice car to the race track where I would coach. Returning home to cooking dinner, a glass of wine and a contented sleep: I might really be able to make a difference!
Ian McDermott and his colleagues at ITSNLP.com taught me a great deal about life, the universe and everything; Specifically Ian was the man who taught me the value of dreams. The wisdom in Ian’s recent quote struck a familiar note.
“I strongly believe that if you want to make the world a better place you’d better start with yourself and that means having the technology that enables you to engage effectively with yourself.”
For me the way you drive a car represents so much about who you are; driving near to the limit of what is possible challenges the very nature of your being; Who you are thus becomes how you drive:
How you develop your driving makes it possible for you to really become yourself and it is this that is fundamental to living a fulfilled and successful life.
And that’s what drives my development.
To be able do this on an ongoing basis I needed to develop a model that was financially viable. It must work as a business. After fifteen years in this business I’m sure I must be doing something right!
The recent collaboration with Mark Hales has been a revelation, he’s a delight to work with and together we have delivered over a dozen Masterclasses at Anglesey. We have recently been preparing a new initiative called “Track Insights” which is designed for relative new comers to circuit driving and prepares people for the track by gentle introduction to basic technique, speed, line and introduces a fundamental understanding of vehicle dynamics.
I am constantly inspired by my clients who change so much and for the better. They are constantly teaching me better ways to coach. To them I say thank you and go be even better people.
Here’s to the next phase in development.
